Wire Rope Constructions And Terminations

Wire ropes come in a multitude of sizes and constructions to suit many applications.

The first picture on the right is an ordinary lay six stranded wire rope, used for many general engineering applications such as overhead cranes, winches, slings etc...

The second picture shows a multi strand or low rotation construction. Primarily this was aimed at the large single fall tower cranes where rotation of the rope was not desirable, but now these types of ropes are found in all walks and particularly on overhead cranes. The tighter tolerance on diameter helps where pressure guides are fitted. There are downfalls to fitting these types of ropes to the wrong application however, so do not hesitate to contact us for advise first.

The third and fourth pictures respectively show a compacted strand and a fully swaged construction. Whilst the two wire ropes differ in characteristics, they both have higher tensile strength and greater surface area due to the strands shape, giving them superior wear resistance to a round strand rope.

All of the basic constructions come in either right hand or left hand lay, some with plastic impregnated cores for additional lubrication lock in and corrosion prevention.

As seen there are many types of standard end terminations available to be swaged tested and certified. But our technical section can draw up and design any other type of fitting if its required.

Ropes dont have to be just for heavy engineering, we do many smaller cable assemblies, galvanised and stainless steel wires, blackened wires for the theatre use, PVC coated and even Nylon coated for the food industries.
